Mother’s Day History
Mother’s Day is May 13. Celebrated on various dates and in various ways around the world, it is a day we celebrate and honor motherhood.
In Ancient Greece the Mother’s Day celebration lasted for three days and revelers brought gifts and flowers to honor the mother of the Olympians.
In the United StatesMother’s Day was founded in 1908 by Anna Jarvis an Appalachian homemaker. She organized the women in her community for a “Mother’s Work Day” to raise awareness of poor economic and health conditions affecting the children in her community. Years later, Julia Ward Howe, author of the lyrics to the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” proposed an annual event called “Mother’s Day”, a day encouraging mothers to rally for peace.
Make a New Mother’s Day Tradition of Inner Peace
The frantic pace of modern everyday life doesn’t allow much time for relaxation and reflection. Inner peace is often an illusive commodity for most of us.
Dedicate this Mother’s Day to a new tradition of sharing inner peace with the mom’s in your life.
Our Suggestions:
- Spend an afternoon in nature. Whether its a walk at Heather Farms Park or a hike on Mt.Diablo, even just sitting in the yard, get out and enjoy our beautiful spring weather.
- Visit the Spa for a relaxing Massage or Pedicure.
- Plan a picnic.
- Give her a gift of two journals (one for you and one for her). Take time to capture your reflections by writing in your journal. Share your peaceful introspections with mom and listen to hers.
A memorable day of inner peace together with mom can be a tradition that lasts a lifetime. The sharing of journals could create a legacy for generations to come.
Wishing you and yours the gift of inner peace, not just on Mother’s Day but every day!
